Sound Walk
The
area that I chose to do my soundwalk in was Glendale, Queens, which is where I currently
live. I chose this area because I wanted to understand the neighborhood that I
live in, and to walk around without the sound of Post Malone’s Stoney album in
my ears. Glendale is a very residential area, which means lot of kids and old people
yelling and screaming for no reason at all. I decided to do my soundwalk on
Easter because I knew that most people would be out, going to church, and enjoying
the nice weather in their Easter attire.
As I walked down to Myrtle Ave from
my house at around noon, I heard an abundance of people speaking all different
languages and little kids running around with their Easter baskets filled up
with eggs full of candy. The kids giggled every time they opened their eggs; happy
to see candy or money hidden within each egg. I walked with my three-year-old
brother and he had his basket and he kept opening his jelly bean filled eggs. The
sound from the eggs being pried open sounded very harsh and the sound of him
munching on the jelly beans sounded so loud to me at that moment, it was like
it was the only thing I could focus on.
We live near a fire station and as we walked towards
CVS, the sound of the sirens rang through the blocks of Glendale. Cars honked
their horns to make it apparent to other drivers that the fire truck was coming
their way. The sound of the fire truck, the sound of the Q55 bus, the sound of
the supermarket’s automatic doors opening and the kids, are all the sounds that
really hear like home to me. A unique sound or a sound that is most memorable
to me was the sound of kids running and stomping around my block and their
little laughs of happiness.
